These cuttings were potted up about 6 months before this picture was taken. The planifolia cutting (vine on the left) was about 12", and the barbellata ("leafless") vanilla very much smaller. I placed the tallest tree fern bark pole I could find in a 5" plastic pot, then planted both cuttings with medium-sized coconut husk chips--nothing else. I then put the plastic pot in a larger clay pot to keep it from falling over. I attached the v. planifolia cutting to the pole with pole pins.

The tallest vine nearly doubled in length between potting and when I took this picture (note how the aerial roots have burrowed into the pole). I've jammed a bamboo stake into the top of the pole to give the top of the vine something to cling to until it's tall enough to be placed in a permanent position in the greenhouse where it can ramble around the greenhouse supports.
